DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The generating series encoding the number of ways to write an integer as a sum of two squares is a modular form. This fact\, combined with properties of modular forms\, recovers the so-called Fermat’s Christmas theorem\, which characterizes which numbers can be written as the sum of two squares. The Gross–Kohnen–Zagier theorem is a geometric version of this phenomenon\, which states that certain generating series constructed from special points in the Jacobian of a Shimura curve are modular forms. In this talk\, we will outline an alternate approach to proving this theorem and discuss some of its arithmetic consequences. For that\, we will use the p-adic uniformization of Shimura curves and the theory of p-adic families of theta series. This talk is based on joint works with Lea Beneish\, Henri Darmon\, Michele Fornea\, and Lennart Gehrmann.
