Résumé : The representation theory of the symmetric and alternating groups are both well understood in characteristic zero but many basic questions, such as the dimensions of the simple modules, remain unanswered over fields of positive characteristic. In this talk I will give a survey the representation theory of these groups, concentrating on the recently discovered "KLR grading" on these algebras, which puts a non-trivial Z-grading on the group algebras. In particular, I will try to explain where the KLR grading comes from and why it is important.
